The tuxedo was
de rigeur
for
the
early Pinoy
Banda in the
United States, trying
to bridge
the
culture
gap with
what later came
to be nicknamed
the Carnegie
Shuffle.
My
father shuffled
off into Hawaiian
music, bright shirts
& ukeleles,
avoiding
taxes
& tuxes.
Had he, how-
ever,
chosen the
dinner-suit route, I’m
sure he would
have stood
out
from
the rest
of the band,
would have been
the Emperor
Penguin.
Jesus,
he was
a handsome man.
