The Secret of the Clouds

It is daytime. The unlit moon
comes across as just another
cloud as it mixes in with them.
Except these clouds don't look
like those clouds — or those /
these, depending on what your

about the ones above my head:
meteorologists have long since been able to define, decline them. These others? Okay, it's obviously a shitty day, but the only secret I can posit they contain is which of asemic notebook, extrusion, or tangled spaghetti do they spring from.

This masterful poetry extinguishes those artificial lines that distinguish a moment from a century. It is all here and available to us, Mark Young shows. “A late/afternoon/point of co-/incidence // this bench/in the/Botanical Gardens/shared/with Desnos/& Diogenes” reminds us nature crafts consciousness right back at us. “Black cockatoos . . .small white flowers.” This against the beautiful political purity of stating the truth in “damp trumpets.”
Where are the

I
shouted out. You
promised you'd
drain the swamp
so I'd be able

that were lying
on the bottom.
Things come together from a distance above, revealing equally how far they are apart. Mark Young’s keen eye disturbs predictability. He knows from many angles refutation and commingling. Pachelbel’s Canon and mismatched feelings between a man and a woman.

é preciso ainda, / nessa transferência, tocar-lhe / a textura assimétrica de arestas / angulosas, ressonâncias / evocativas, cadências / paratácticas, imagens / dolorosas, elipses / ambíguas, frases / quebradas. é preciso vê-las / deambular, atrair-se e / repelir-se, constelar-se e / cristalizar-se. é preciso / afagar as formas, coá-las / no filtro das línguas (…).»

Os poetas antologiados: Adam Zagajewski (1945, Lviv, Ucrânia), Amalia Bautista (1962, Madrid, Espanha), Aram Saroyan (1943, Nova Iorque, EUA), Arvind Krishna Mehrotra (1947, Lahore, Paquistão), Billy Collins (1941, Nova Iorque, EUA), Charles Simic (1938, Belgrado, Jugoslávia), David Lehman (1948, Nova Iorque, EUA), Eunice de Souza (1940, Pune, Índia. Faleceu em 2017), Howie Good (1951, Nova Iorque, EUA), J. R. Solonche (1946, Nova Iorque, EUA), Jane Hirshfield (1953, Nova Iorque. EUA), Jennifer Clement (1960, Greenwich, Connecticut, EUA), José Luis García Martín (1950, Aldeanueva del Camino, Cáceres, Espanha), Luis Alberto de Cuenca (1950, Madrid, Espanha), Mark Young (1941, Hokitika, Nova Zelândia), Michael Dylan Welch (1962, Watford, Inglaterra), Nathalie Handal (1969, Haiti), Neil Curry (1937, Newcastle on Tyne, Inglaterra), Owen Bullock (1967, Cornualha, Inglaterra), Pat Boran (1963, Portlaoise, Irlanda), Roger Wolfe (1962, Westerham, Kent, Inglaterra), Steve Klepetar (1949, Xangai, China).

The Prince of Objects (from Series Magritte)

Static or dynamic — the ontology
of most games depends upon

a division between the objects
in play. If one is lucky, the dynamic

can occasionally be seen through

recognize what we see. The dance

the music. Once there was tea for

The latest issue of Otoliths is live.

Issue fifty-seven of Otoliths, the southern autumn, 2020 issue, is now available online. It is dedicated to poet, publisher, & piano teacher Peter Ganick who passed away in April.

It's also the fourteenth birthday of Otoliths, but with the world the way it is, I don't really feel like celebrating.

Once again it's a wide-ranging issue, with work from Mason McClay, Michael Ruby, Brandstifter, Texas Fontanella, Sanjeev Sethi, bofa xesjum, Dylan Williams, Andrew Topel, Jim Meirose, bart plantenga, Willie Smith, J.
