geographies: Kyzylorda

The two rice mills that operate
in the city are the main out-
                       lets for those Kazakhstani
                arthouse films that tend to
                            do well at European film
                       festivals. But now that the
             Aral Sea has almost totally
shrunk away there is no direct

reason for tourists to visit despite
the grand Tsarist railway station that
dates from 1904 & was the arrival
                        port for Korean deportees
under Stalin. Snow is common —
                           though light — in winter.
